Martin Luther Series

During October we're going to be spending time looking at and learning from the life of Martin Luther. Luther lived five centuries ago and yet his legacy lives on. By understanding the times in which he lived and the convictions he lived by we hope to be inspired by his story. We will also take time to explore Luther's mistakes.

Our prayer is that we would be as convinced as he was that the Bible is God's Word. We hope to be able to say, as Luther said when facing possible execution: "...I am bound by the Scriptures... and my conscience is captive to the Word of God."

Small Group Resources

If you've not seen the movie Luther please borrow a copy from your Small Group.

We will also be watching Luther: The Life and Legacy of a German Reformer over the month and using the accompanying free study guide to discuss the impact of Luther's life.

Further Resources

If you would like to find out more about the life of Martin Luther, you could use the following resources - some of which are free but others are paid for.

Books

Luther on the Christian Life by Carl Trueman

Martin Luther by Martin Marty

Reviews of both books are available on The Gospel Coalition's website. Reading Luther himself is also important to understanding him. You can find many of his books available free online at the Christian Classics Ethereal Library.

Courses

Again, The Gospel Coalition has curated a tremendous amount of resources that help us understand Martin Luther's role in The Reformation. This 'course' is free and includes video lectures, further reading recommendations and interviews with preachers and theologians about the impact Luther has had on them.

For a more general introduction to The Reformation Mike Reeves' Unquenchable Flame is excellent. If you'd rather read an interview with the author on the book, you can!
